I like to cleanse before every season. To be clear, my cleanses never involve being hungry.
Let’s address the elephant in the room. Putting on a bathing suit for the first time each season is kind scary. Let’s try to make it easier this year. This first week of this cleanse is based on my friend and life coach Karen’s two week cleanse. She’s amazing to work with. People are paying a fair amount of money for her cleanses and other tips. With this cleanse you can choose to do one or both of the weeks with me. I put them together because I think they work really well in combination and will help get your body ready for summer. I also find that as the weather gets warmer, its easier to clean out your kitchen and stock up with the delicious fruits and vegetables of the season. If you are really ambitious, its also an amazing time to plant a fruit and vegetable garden.
In order to be successful, you must prepare for this cleanse in advance. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. So what is it all about?
Cleanse Week 1
Week 1 is an elimination cleanse. From this lifestyle change, your sleep, mood, energy, skin, digestion, clarity and overall balance will improve. Lets be honest, who doesn’t seek this?? It’s one week of your life- come on…join me!
Try eliminating: Caffeine, Soy, Peanuts, Corn, Wheat, Dairy, Sugar (including alcohol and artificial sweeteners) and processed food. If you believe you have an egg sensitivity, remove them too. I know this sounds insane and to be honest with you, I keep in a single shot of espresso and a macha latte daily. When I do this for two weeks, I often add alcohol in the second week. What are you willing to give up to be healthy?
Why on earth would I follow this insane elimination cleanse?
Quite simply because you will feel better. You will balance your hormones which will help you to lose weight, sleep better and increase your energy. Removing all of the toxins from your body is the best gift that you can give yourself. Some of the toxins we encounter in everyday life are stored as fat in our bodies. Yuck.
Here’s how it works- buy everything you need before you get started. I’ll include a sample shopping list below. You should aim for three servings of fresh vegetables every day (try to include on dark green or orange vegetable every day) and one raw vegetable each day.
- Buy organic produce if possible. Eat only high quality grass fed meats and wild fish.
- Drink a cup of water (room temp or hot) with freshly squeezed lemon or apple cider vinegar to start your day.
- On this cleanse you will eat whole fresh foods from nature.
- Fresh raw fruits and vegetables
- Cooked fruits and vegetables (no corn)
- Brown rice, quinoa, amaranth and millet- I have a few good recipes that I’ll share with you.
- Beans and legumes. I’ve recently discovered how much I love lentils and navy beans. String beans are also a great addition to foods or eaten raw.
- Nuts and Seeds (not peanuts). If your goal is to lose weight, try to limit portion sizes of nuts. They are a good fat but still calorie dense. I encourage 1-2 servings per day.
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil and Coconut Oil.
- Sauerkraut and other fermented foods.
- Detox and herbal teas.
- Water, water, water.
- Teecino (substitute for coffee)
- Bee Pollen
- Cacao Nibs
- Cacao Powder
- Camp Camp Powder
- Chia Seeds
- Coconut Oil
- Gogi berries
- Hemp seeds
- Maca Powder
- Spirulina Powder
Cleanse Week 2
During the first week you have prepared your body to shed fat and to work efficiently. Now get ready to slim down. Week two is inspired by my beautiful, fit and skinny friend.
Start your day with a Millennium Blend Detox drink. You can click on the picture below to see details.
Wait at least one hour.
Now for the magic ingredient. This protein powder will kick start your metabolism (in conjunction with the drink above). Mix Vanilla Protein Powder (click on picture below) with water or almond milk (if you are ambitious make your own almond milk- its amazing), fruit and greek yogurt (if you aren’t sensitive to dairy). I’m sensitive to dairy so I’ll just use frozen bananas. To me a smoothie without a frozen banana is like a salad without lettuce.
If you are all in, buy the chocolate protein powder too. This is great mixed with almond milk, frozen banana and a drop of peppermint extract.
During week two of the cleanse, for lunch, have a large salad. Add lots of fresh vegetables. Try to limit the dressings. I like to blend avocado with a little mustard, extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar, salt and pepper and make my own dressing. Cilantro is also a great addition.
An alternate lunch could be greek yogurt and granola. Try to be careful and make sure the granola doesn’t have sugar added to it. It’s best if you can make your own. Look out for an amazing granola recipe that I will be sharing.
Mid-day snack: Apple and peanut butter, pear and hummus or cottage cheese and cantaloupe. The key here is to combine a fruit and a protein.
For dinner I like to eat with my family. I try to only have one portion size and add extra vegetables on occasion. Cleanse or no cleanse, I believe family dinners are very important. Try and savor every moment of this meal. Do not eat standing up or in front of the TV or while on your phone. Even if you are eating alone, get into a relaxed state before eating. Take a few deep breaths and chew your food 20-30 times per bite. During week two of the cleanse I often add in a glass of wine on the weekends and during dinners out.
