I’d like to welcome my good friend and guest blogger, Jennifer Gross, to the SincerelyLisa family. Jennifer is a brand marketing and strategy specialist with over 20 years of experience in marketing and advertising. She’s worked with some serious players in the beauty industry such as Revlon, MD SolarSciences, Lancome, and Johnson & Johnson. More importantly, Jen is beautiful both inside and out. She is my go-to person for anything beauty related. I hope you love her beauty tips as much as I do!
For quite some time, I have been on a quest for the perfect anti-aging skincare regimen. During my many years in the beauty industry, I came across every type of product you can imagine, all promising to reduce my fine lines and wrinkles in 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 4 weeks…you get the picture. Ever since the birth of AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids) years ago, there has been an influx of highly efficacious products claiming to reverse the signs of aging and take years off the calendar. I’ve tried a lot of these products — some good and some just ok — but for the past few years something has occurred to me. Yes, I want the fine lines and wrinkles to be diminished and yes, I do what I can to prevent skin damage, but knowing that the lines won’t go away completely without a trip to the dermatologist or plastic surgeon, I think what every woman really wants is that youthful, rosy glow. If I could get that “I just ran 5 miles in the cold” look (because let’s face it, anyone who knows me knows I’m not a runner and not even a cold weather walker!), I can almost live with the lines. For me, the glow is where it’s at.
Beauty companies have wisely tapped into this and on a recent trip to Sephora and Blue Mercury, I noted a whole array of products promising That Glow, including Blue Mercury’s own line- M-61 PowerGlow Peel, Size 30 Treatments. In my mind, there are two ways to go about getting the glow — well, three if you count running in the freezing cold, which we’ve already established I’m not doing. Either use a product formulated with natural acids to exfoliate the outer layer of your skin to reveal rosier, brighter skin underneath or get a really good natural-looking blush. I actually do both and have found a regimen that works really well for me — until the next big beauty breakthrough comes along.
I start and end my day with a great cleanser. I have tried all of the fancy ones, and in the high-end category my top choice is Revive Cleanser Gentil (Normal To Dry Skin) 6Oz, but when that runs out, I always seem to come back to my favorite, good old inexpensive, lasts-forever, can-buy-at-Costco, Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser. It’s gentle, non-drying and effective. I am someone who likes a simple regimen, so a toner can seem like an extra annoying step, but if I feel like I can’t get the day’s dirt and makeup off with a simple face washing, I use Skinceuticals LHA Solution with as many cotton balls as it takes until they come clean.
For the past few years I have been a big fan of peel pads and Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel is one I have always really liked, but I just discovered Cane + Austin Miracle Pad + 30% and absolutely love it. It comes in a green jar with 60 pads, so it should last 30-60 days or more depending on whether you use it twice a day, once a day or every few days. The pads are saturated with pharmaceutical grade glycolic acid and you can immediately feel a tingle, which I like because it tells me something is actually happening. My skin looked immediately refreshed and glowy after just one use. I’ve used the M-61 PowerGlow Peel, but I prefer Cane + Austin. For a less-expensive version, L’Oreal has Revitalift Bright Reveal Brightening Peel Pads, which do the job for less money. It is a great inexpensive option, but I wish the pads had more product on them, as they felt a little dry to the touch and I didn’t get enough of a sensation that they were working.
After the pads, we come to my next and favorite step — facial oils. I will not spend the time here extolling the virtues of facial oils (I will leave that for a future blog post), but suffice it to say I’ve been converted to slathering oil all over my face and am actually a little obsessed. I am a huge fan of the Sunday Riley product line and the Luna Sleeping Night Oil is my favorite. In fact, I hear it has become a cult favorite of beauty editors and bloggers. Formulated with Retinol, you can feel it really working. It has a blue tint, so you need to rub it in well to ensure you don’t see any blue on your skin. For day, I like Juno Hydroactive Cellular Face Oil formulated with “superfood seed oils,” antioxidants, vitamins, amino acids and omegas for a radiant look. With both of these products, my skin looks re-energized right after I put it on. After the facial oil sinks in, I use Sunday Riley C.E.O. Rapid Flash Brightening Serum with Vitamin C, which dermatologists say is essential to have in your daily skincare routine. It has a very light, pleasant orange scent. Last stop before makeup is my favorite MD SolarSciences Anti-Aging Moisturizer SPF 30. This brand is amazing and was developed by a top NY dermatologist, so while this product has great moisturizing and anti-aging properties, it’s also got broad spectrum sun protection without the harmful chemicals of other moisturizers with SPF. It’s as good as using a full-on sunscreen on your face, but it’s actually a really effective anti-aging moisturizer, too, so it’s the best of both worlds. Sun protection is essential to keeping your skin looking young and I use it 365 days a year regardless of the weather.
One more thing…SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense Sunscreen with tint is one of my new favorite products. I use it as a light, natural foundation even when I use the MD SolarSciences moisturizer with sunscreen. If you have a moisturizer you can’t part with, use the tint as your sunscreen — it has an SPF of 50! The tint is universal to all skin tones and gives the most subtle touch of coverage and leaves my skin looking dewey and natural. As for the afforementioned glowy blush, I am a huge fan of Glossier Cloud Paint. It’s a cream blush in a tube. Dot that on your cheeks after the regimen above and you will have a radiant, youthful glow all day long.
All of these amazing products give me the youthful glow I crave. If you aren’t a fan of too many steps and were to ask me to pick 2-3 must-have products from the mix, I would say the pads and the oils are absolutely essential. Try them and let me know what you think! And I’m always switching it up, so I will report back as I find new noteworthy brands and products I think you should try.
