Herbs can help us to grow younger and healthier!
Herbs, Yoga and Ayurveda- three new commonly used words in my home. I’m on a mission to help my bones restrengthen and to deal with my thyroid issues by using Ayurvedic Medicine (food and herbs) and Yoga. I am amazed that by adding herbs and changing the types of foods that I eat, I have been able to lose 5 pounds at a time when my doctors are expecting me to gain weight (if you recall they decreased my synthroid to prevent bone loss).
I want to start out by telling you about my BIG day today. I am almost a fully certified yoga instructor. Today my classmate and I performed our hour-long workshop as a culmination of the yoga teacher training program that we have been taking. The class went really well. It was a restorative workshop which allowed students time to both build heat and move and to calm their minds and rejuvenate. Once we pass the written exam and get our licenses, I hope to offer the workshop to my community so be on the look out for dates.
My favorite tip from the class is how to calm an anxious mind with a simple breathing technique – 2:1 breathing. For example breathe in for a count of 8, hold for 7 and exhale for 16. If this is too hard at first, start by breathing in for 4, holding for 3 and breathing out for 8.
As I’ve been on my yoga path, I’ve learned a tremendous amount about herbs and how beneficial they can be to our health. I am fascinated by them. As a graduation gift, my amazing instructor brought us Golden Milk (available for sale by my instructor, contact me for details) and Protein Balls (I hope to share the protein ball ingredients with you soon but she sells these as well and they are delicious!). Both were chock full of herbs that have many medical uses. My teacher, Colleen, is a certified herbalist. She has put together the following information about herbs and their many benefits.
Below you will find a list of the herbs she uses to make Golden Milk as well as their health benefits. The K, V and P stand for Kapha, Vata and Pitta- the three dosas we discussed in my article on weight loss and Ayurvedic diets. The Golden Milk contains all of the ingredients below and has a positive effect on brain function. Sorry that it reads so technically – hopefully you get the gist.
Colleen Lila has combined these herbs to create a medicinal blend golden milk powder. She created a small batch made with love at home. All you do is mix one teaspoon with milk on low heat before boiling point. Then remove from heat and add honey. Best to drink before bed. If you’d like to order some contact me or contact Colleen by clicking on the link to her website here.
I am constantly on the lookout for things that help us to grow younger- items that will help us to age gracefully and feel great while we do it. The thing that I love most about Yoga is that it will help keep your body and especially your spine flexible. It is said that if you look at someone’s spinal age, you can tell their true age. I’m hoping to age backwards for a bit!
