As a hockey mom with kids that love to ski, snowboard and play outside in cold weather, I have tried everything to keep my feet warm. I am on a constant quest for the best winter boots.
I recently learned that our bodies purposely allow our hands and feet to get cold so that they can keep our vital organs warm. When our bodies keep our hearts and lungs warm by reducing blood flow to the extremities, it causes our hands, feet (and even our ears) to be really cold!
In addition to choosing the best winter boot, there are other things we can do to warm up our extremities- we can boost circulation by eating heart- healthy foods. I suggest trying avocados, nuts (especially walnuts), olive oil and fatty fish. As a person that believes our bodies are a whole unit and that we are what we eat, it doesn’t surprise me to learn that eating the right foods will create adequate blood flow and temperature regulation.
Discovering that the key to warmth is warm feet, I have been on a quest to keep my tootsies warm for years. I’ve tried every wool sock but I cannot say they do enough. I was even encouraged by a store to buy heated socks. I plugged them in and then got a good chuckle with my hubby when we saw the giant battery pack that is meant to stick out of the side of each sock. The heated socks will keep your feet warm and I recommend them for prolonged outings in the cold. I found them too cumbersome for skiing in. I am much happier (with both the warmth factor and the expense) with the disposable ones. While you are at it, I’d throw some hand warmers into your cart as well.
I’ve discovered that Sorel boots are not only warm but stylish. I love my Sorel’s because they are warm but not to clunky.
I had to update this post because, I recently purchased the UGG Adirondak II boot in black. I coveted the white for a while but was unable to get them anywhere in the country in my size (problems- lol). I have to say, the Uggs were actually warmer and much more cozy. They were a bit clunkier but I think I actually like them better. I’d recommend the UGG’s over the Sorel’s and that was a surprise to me.
This winter, I am coveting a new pair of Ugg gloves. I find it mentally and physically easier to brave the cold when I love my winter fashion (and when it keeps me warm). I’ve research the best glove options (and while paying for a brand name is certainly not required) choosing fleece gloves will keep your hands very warm.
Optimal circulation will enhance your warmth throughout the winter. I highly recommend you add some yoga to your routine. Follow me for fun flows throughout this season.
I feel this article would not be complete without me mentioning that spices can bring up your body temperature. I love to drink golden milk in the winter because its ingredients- cinnamon, cardamom and ginger will help increase your body temperature. I also try to include garlic, horesradish and cayenne in my savory foods. Right now, I’m loving a very simple “tea”. To make it simply add some hot water to slices of fresh ginger. After a few minutes add a dot of Manuka honey and ripple milk or almond milk. Enjoy…
