Now is the time to start getting ready for summer.
What does this mean to me? Here are my top 5 things that I must do before summer can arrive:
I’d like to say that a busy mom just sits around and waits for summer to roll in! WRONG!! The end of year rush is upon us and you better get ready for it!
1. Start getting your kids ready for summer camp.
Especially if the kids go to sleep away camp, now is the time to dust off the trunks and start going through last years clothes. Maybe if you are lucky one or two things will still fit. Consider donating the rest. Someone else will really appreciate them.
- If you are extremely organized you can wait until memorial day to purchase your kids clothes. I find that the memorial day sales are the best for this. Get your lists ready, make sure your labels are purchased- I buy mine from label daddy. The iron on labels are my favorite. For small items, I use my flat iron to iron on.
- While you are at it, go through your closet too. Get rid of anything (again, consider donating) you didn’t wear last year.
Buy those end of year teacher gifts. Consider something for the school nurses, aides, the person in the front office and even custodians or crossing guards that have been helpful to you throughout the year. I like to check out pinterest for cute/inexpensive gift ideas.
2. Start creating your new healthy eating and active lifestyle.
Join me for my 7 day challenge (starts this Friday) to make this happen! Everything in life is about forming habits. Do you know people that go to the gym everyday- they do it because its a habit. Not going makes them feel uncomfortable. Same with eating plans. If you are used to huge meals, tons of white flour and sugar or eating a lot throughout the day (and in the evening), then this is what you are used to and therefore most comfortable doing. Try for a week to get used to brushing your teeth after dinner and then not eating again until breakfast (or chew gum). You should wake up hungry. I believe in the concept of calories and if you don’t burn all that you eat/ use, you will gain weight. Calorie deficits are much easier to create if you eat more protein (I try to incorporate protein into every meal) and drink more water! I like to call this Spring Cleaning My Body.
3. Create a Summer budget for yourself.
Use this budget to buy yourself some summer staples that you will look forward to wearing. I like to make sure my white jeans (summer staple) still fit and then buy a cute top to go with them (off the shoulder tops are in this season). A new bathing suit is a must if you are planning to be in a place where you will need one. I find my body changes every year and I feel so much better in a suit that fits just right. Two women in my town created a company called Joya Swimwear. I like their products because they are customizable. Their made to order suits are amazing. I also like to buy a new pair of sandals. Fit Flops are always a go to for me because they are stylish and comfortable.
Last but not least, my favorite item to purchase- athleisurewear. Let’s face it, its a lot easier to motivate yourself to workout when you are in cute exercise gear. My favorites are bluefish sport, Lululemon and the clothing line from Barry’s Boot Camp. I’m not sure who does Barry’s buying but they have very similar taste to me and every time I work out there I am so tempted to leave with something.
4. Refresh your sunscreen and your make-up.
Now is the time to get your sunscreen ready. As you know, I’m a huge fan of the SkinCeuticals line. SkinCeuticals daily sunscreen provides effective protection from photoaging. It provides a high level of broad spectrum sun protection with chemical-free UV glides on beautifully and makes your skin look and feel great. Throw on a little mascara and lip gloss and your summer day look is complete!
5. Think about a summer garden.
To be honest, I think about a summer garden every year. So far, I have not actually acted upon this wish of mine. My dream of fresh tomatoes will some day become a reality but until then, there’s always Whole Foods! Let me know if you have more success than me!
